Nolvadex also called tamoxifen is a non-steroidal anti-estrogen that competitively inhibits estrogen receptors in the target organs and tumors therein. The mechanism of action has not been fully investigated, although it is known that a complex of Nolvadex with the receptor and cofactor appears and is then transferred to the cell nucleus, preventing hypertrophy of the cells dependent on regulation by estrogen. The effect of the medication can last for several weeks after a single dose. Nolvadex can induce ovulation in women, stimulate the production of gonadotropic hormones of pituitary gland. In men with oligospermia, it increases the concentration of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone and estrogen in the blood serum. Nolvadex is used to treat breast cancer in women and men (especially after castration) and also when it has spread to other parts of the body, kidney cancer, melanoma and sarcomas of the soft tissues with estrogen receptors, cancer of the ovary.
